Elton John’s Emotional Letter To His Sons Shows The Reality Behind His Family Life

Elton John became a dad in December 2010 — but you won’t hear too much about his sons. Like a lot of celebrity parents, he makes sure the kids are protected from the glare of the spotlight. Still, every so often he drops a rare glimpse of what life is like inside his household. One such occasion was when a touching letter he wrote was released to the public in 2022.

Happy birthday

John published the letter via Time magazine in March 2022. There was a very good reason for doing it at that time — it was the singer’s 75th birthday, and naturally he was in a reflective mood. The letter detailed some of the wisdom and counsel he wanted to pass down to his children.

Zachary and Elijah

The sons are called Zachary and Elijah, and they call both John and his husband David Furnish “dad.” We don’t know how the singer shared the message with them, or what their reaction was when they saw it, and because of the music star’s commitment to privacy, we probably never will. But it’s a very touching and very sweet letter.

Didn't last

And it’s all the more touching when you realize what John went through to become a parent. As you may know, it took a while before he even found the love of his life. He was once married to a woman named Renate Blauel, having wed her a mere three days after proposing — but the relationship didn’t last, and it resulted in no children.

Party boy

After that John drifted through life for a while, low on self-worth. All the same, he was still one of the most famous names in music. And naturally he was invited to, and threw, a lot of parties. It was at one particular gathering, in October 1993, that he met Furnish for the first time.
